Royal
Clifford Jones, Jr., has two master's degrees from the
University of Rhode Island, one in English (1971) and one in
Computer Science (1994). The title of his latest thesis is
"Evaluating Competitive Performance with Rankings and Ratings."
His interest in rating theory dates from 1974, when he corresponded
briefly with the late Professor Elo. He holds a U.S. patent
for a Minimum-Speed Game Timer. His email address is
royjones3z@cox.net (omit z).
Authors note: I have respectfully used John Tenniel's
illustrations for Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass
(1871), a book that charmed my childhood and inspired my lackluster
career in chess.
